For my language-impaired students I’ve put together a summer practice calendar to practice their language skills. Each day has a question or task to complete, targeting a variety of language skills.

For example:

  • How are an apple and a banana alike? How are they different?
  • Describe a butterfly
  • Look in the refrigerator. Name all the fruits you see.
  • Say these words in a sentence: ran, threw, went

The point is to get kids and their parents talking and thinking about language every day. EVERY DAY! Research has shown that short, frequent (daily) practice is more effective than weekly, longer practice. Do it!

I call this format “fridge practice”. Put the calendar on your fridge, and do it every day!
